The Venters Lab leverages cutting-edge DNA sequencing technologies to address key questions in cancer biology. Dr. Venters earned his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Pennsylvania State University in 2008, and previously received his BS in Microbiology from Oklahoma State University.
During his thesis work, he became an expert in genome-wide techniques to study how genes are regulated in model organisms, which culminated in publications in top-tier journals, such as Molecular Cell, Nature, Genome Research, and other collaborative papers. In his postdoctoral research with Dr. Frank Pugh, he further developed a new technique to precisely pinpoint where proteins are located in the human genome and applied it to study the basis for how genes are misregulated in leukemia (Nature 2013).
Moving forward, his current research at Vanderbilt is focused on understanding how specific DNA-binding proteins regulate cancer signaling pathways in leukemia cells. How do a handful of these DNA-binding proteins override normal cellular signals and drive malignant cells to uncontrollably proliferate? At the molecular level, how do these pathways intersect? The impact of Dr. Venters’ research lies in the potential to identify convergence points in the regulation of cancer signaling pathways that can be exploited with new therapeutic approaches.
